Water polo is one of the oldest segments of The Olympics history, as it was included in the early 1900 Olympics and had been a part of the Olympics till these days. There are only a few more days of the opening of RIO OLYMPIC 2016 and water polo is one of the most exciting segments that are catching the interest of the viewers of all around the world. In this edition, this particular segment is scheduled to take place from 6th of August to 20th of August.
The official venues that have been selected for this segment are Maria Lenk Aquatic Center for the preliminary stages and Olympic Aquatics Stadium for the last round of the men’s preliminary stage and the other play off matches. Both of these two stadiums are located at the main Olympics city of Rio de Janeiro.
20 teams are expected to take part in this event from the different parts of the globe, where 12 of them will be from the male competitors and the rest 8 ones are from the females. The total number of the competitors is expected to be about 260. 156 of the participants will be men and the other 104 are women.
The International Federation for water polo, FINA declared the qualification pathway of this global competition. The winners of the world league, world championships and continental championships will get their spots in the Olympics. The other teams will be selected from the Olympics qualification tournament. The host country will get direct access to this competition.
Format of the Competition
All the male and female teams will be divided in two groups consisting of six male teams and four for the female ones. There will be four different stages in this competition, which comprises the preliminary stage, quarter final, semi final and lastly the final. The winners of the elimination stage will be selected by penalty shootout if it would be necessary.
2012 LONDON OLYMPICS
In 2012, the tournament format and the other criteria were similar to this year’s edition of water polo competition. Croatia won the gold medal in the men’s final and the United States secured the gold in the women’s division.
